Outdoor Story Time

Friday September 24, 2021 - Friday October 1, 2021

Time: 11:00am - 11:30am

Location: Bruce St. Lawn at L.E. Shore Library..

Bring your blankets! We will be hosting an engaging and fun Story Time session every week on Friday at 11 a.m.

We will have social circles clearly marked on the lawn (Bruce street) and properly sized to accommodate you and your children, while adhering to all provincial and Health Unit guidelines on physical distancing. You will be able to sit and listen to stories, and sing-along to songs and rhymes! While we normally support movement in our Story Times, due to physical distancing and to support everyone’s health & safety, all families and participants must remain within their marked social circle for the program.

Please note that Outdoor Story Time is weather dependant. For rain days, check out our YouTube page for our Virtual Story Time program.

See the Salmon Run

Major salmon migration event includes nature walk with conservation experts, gourmet food, FREE kids snacks and edu-tainment! The Blue Mountain Watershed Trust's See the Salmon Run even is back on Saturday, September 25th from 11am to 2pm. This event is a chance for people of all ages to see scores of massive Chinook Salmon fight their way up Silver Creek on their annual spawning run.

The Blue Mountains Public Library will be giving away aquatic-themed Make & Take Craft Kits, plus many more organizations and sponsors with activities, food, prizes, and more!

The event includes parking on-site and will take place at the Foley property, 609830 Side Rd 12 The Blue Mountains, ON L9Y 0P5, just west of the intersection of 6th Street and Osler Bluff Road. It’s open to the public and has never disappointed in being both educational and a whole lot of fun for all ages. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket or folding chairs for lunchtime, since socially distanced seating is limited.

THE KIDS CLUBHOUSE is an exciting program geared just for kids. This fun and engaging program will provide children with activities, crafts, puzzles, books, and movies that they can enjoy at home.
Each week we will prepare a creative and engaging activity pack that you may pick up from the Library. Every activity kit will include a weekly STEM activity, science experiment, craft, and a super fun activity booklet.
Each booklet will have a variety of curriculum-based activities. 
Children can learn about different continents, countries, oceans, and so much MORE! Every Tuesday at 4:00 pm, you can meet Jen over ZOOM to discuss the weekly activity kit theme, meet friends, chat and make your weekly activity together!

Birds of The Blue Mountains

Birds of The Blue Mountains (Thornbury Area), a new presentation from David T. Chapman, will premiere on the Blue Mountains Public Library YouTube Channel. Learn about local birds with an expert bird watcher.

This area is vast and diverse for birds, large and small. There are so many different types of terrain including marshes, woodlands, and grasslands, hills and valleys, in addition to lakes and the bay, it is therefore no surprise that the varieties of birds that we can see span a wide array of spectacular colours. In this program we will be focusing on some of the most sought after birds of the spring migration, including a segment on the ever popular warblers and many others.

Apple Tasting Challenge

The Blue Mountains Public Library has teamed up with Goldsmith's Orchards for the Apple Tasting Passport Challenge.

Try 4 local varieties of apples for your chance to win!

Register below. Pick up a passport at L.E. Shore Library or Craigleith Heritage Depot after October 1st - and get out there to taste the different varieties of apples listed in the passport, check off the ones you try, write down your tasting notes (sweet, crunchy, sour, delicious, etc), fill out the ballot and drop off before the end of October for your chance to win great prizes, including a gift basket from Goldsmith's.

Apples can be from any store (or orchard) but if you show your Passport at Goldsmith's  - you will receive a FREE sample bag of apples (while supplies last)

Astronomy in Our Upper Atmosphere

Meet Ian Wheelband from the Royal Astronomical Society on The Blue Mountains Public Library YouTube Channel on Tuesday, October 12th at 7:00 pm for an informative evening of Astronomy In Our Upper Atmosphere. 

Ian will speak about human objects in the atmosphere, like the International Space Station and Elon Musk's Star-Link satellite system, meteors, and the northern lights, and why the Northern lights are often better to view in the Fall. Ian will also show us through the telescope, the Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, dumbbell nebula (a dying star), veil nebula (an ancient supernova remnant), and the Hercules globular cluster.

Dorothy Crysler Bird Club

The club is named for Dorothy Crysler, a remarkable local artist, journalist, author and birder! This club takes her cue, as she was "the messenger not the expert". This group is for anyone, new or established as a birder.

Letters to Santa - LAST DAY

Monday November 22, 2021 - Thursday December 2, 2021

Location: L.E. Shore Library.

Write a letter to Santa and drop it in our North Pole Mailbox at the L.E. Shore Library, and the staff there will make sure it gets to Santa at the North Pole. 

Here's how to do it:

1. Write a letter to Santa and put it in an envelope addressed to:       

Santa Claus
North Pole
H0H 0H0
Canada

2. Bring your letter to the L.E. Shore Library and drop it off at the North Pole Mailbox. (No postage necessary). 

That's it! Each child who mails a letter will receive a personal reply from Santa Claus via Canada Post. 

Remember to include your full name and mailing address – so Santa knows where to send your letter! If you forget to put your letter in an envelope Santa will write a letter to the library and the staff will be sure to let you know that he still received your letter!

Letter can be dropped off between Monday November 22 – Thursday December 2nd

In order to receive a reply by Christmas, please drop off the letter no later than 6pm Thursday, Dec 2nd.

Winter Birding in Ontario

Winter Birding in Ontario, a new presentation from David T. Chapman, will premiere on the Blue Mountains Public Library YouTube Channel. Learn about bird watching in the colder months of winter. 

This exciting program will provide insight for viewing beautiful birds in the cold season whether you enjoy bird watching along hiking trails or in your own backyard. It will focus on many of the songbirds that visit your feeders, but also some of the rarities that can sometimes stay around after the breeding season. This eye popping presentation on backyard songbirds, waterfowl and birds of prey will set you off on a lifelong journey of looking for all your favourite species.

Canadian Animals BIG & small

Tuesday January 18, 2022

Location: The Blue Mountains Public Library Zoom.

Join us on Zoom for a presentation of Canadian Animals BIG & small with wildlife photographer, Jason George. Join us on Zoom on Tuesday January 18th at 7pm, please register below.

Jason George will take you on a trip around the North America as he shares some of his best photographs and experiences with many of your favourite animals. He will share some tips and tricks about how he captures Canada’s animals with his camera. As we travel with Jason, he will share with you his experiences with many different animals, from bugs, frogs and snakes to red fox, (not so red) to majestic moose. You won’t know what you’ll see turtles, birds, wolf, …oh my!! Canada really does, have some amazing wildlife. Jason will end the session with a mini–Safari ‘Hunt’/eye training activity to help you find more animals on your outings. And then end with a Q&A.

Registrants will receive a Zoom link via email before the event.
